Christina Mairs with Theta Sister, Grace Cho, at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
When I first came to the States for college in 2007, I had no comprehension of the sorority system or its ideals or values, until my freshman year roommate, who also joined Theta, convinced me to go through recruitment. Just 2 years on and I cannot imagine being at Harvard without Kappa Alpha Theta.
The Zeta Xi Chapter is comprised of around 100 outstanding women, with a diverse interest base ranging from art, music, dance and athletics, to politics, law and healthcare. Together, the women of Zeta Xi make up a remarkable community of sisters striving together for social, intellectual and moral growth. The tremendous support I have received from my sisters over the last few years is typical of our chapter members. Not only have they helped and supported me through the transition to college, the culture shock of coming to the States, and some personal challenges, but members have also encouraged me to strive to achieve the goals I set for myself.
My own family was pleased to have one of my Theta sisters, Grace Cho, stay with us for a few weeks in Ireland this summer before we traveled on to visit Paris together. Windsor, another Theta, told Grace that Longchamp bags were a bargain at the Longchamp store in Paris, so tracking down the store became our mission. We had no store address and absolutely no knowledge of French, nor of Paris for that matter, but Thetas don’t give up that easily and after 3 or 4 hours of searching we eventually got there and, most importantly, got the bags!
Sixteen years of Zeta Xi alumni stand as a testament to the continuing strength of our chapter. Members have gone on to become successful after college doing a variety of things, from attending law school to working for international non-profits and consultancy firms, to dancing for the New Jersey Jets live on television! From Los Angeles to Ghana, the women of Zeta Xi continue to share the bonds of sisterhood long after graduation.
Zeta Xi is just 1 in more than 125 collegiate chapters of Kappa Alpha Theta across the US and Canada, along with 200 alumni chapters, who together make up the oldest Greek Letter Fraternity known among women. This year is a very special one for us because on January 27th 2010, Theta celebrated its 140th birthday! I am very excited to have the opportunity to serve as President during this milestone year and next summer I look forward to traveling to Tucson, Arizona to represent our Chapter at the biannual Theta National Convention and to meet more of the 210,000 initiated members of Kappa Alpha Theta.
Loyally,
