Service

 A Common Passion of Thetas

Service is very important to Zeta Xi and its individual members. Throughout the year, the chapter participates in a huge number of philanthropy events including All-University Relay for Life, Kappa Alpha Theta's International Day of Service and Habitat for Humanity and Zeta Xi also runs a weekly shift at the student-run Harvard Square Homeless shelter and organizes two of its own service events each year. We enjoy making a difference to our community, especially when we can do it together!

Annual Events

Charity Denim

Our biggest service activity is our Annual Charity Denim sale in the fall. We work with the company Charity Denim who provides us with brand new discount designer jeans. Our job is to provide the venue and advertise for the event to attract a host of customers from the University and the wider community. All of the money raised goes towards our local Boston chapter of CASA, our national philanthropy.

Kickin' It for CASA

Each spring, when the weather finally begins to get warm, we run a charity kickball tournament called 'Kickin' it for CASA' and invite lots of teams from different on-campus groups. Sadly in the spring semester of 2010 the weather just was not on our side so we will be hosting the event early in the Fall 2010 semester. We look forward to seeing you and your teammates there!

Relay for Life

This Spring the 6 Greek Letter Organizations (Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Chi, Delta Gamma, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Kappa Kappa Gamma and Sigma Alpha Epsilon) on Harvard's campus life came together and raised $23,538.38 for Relay for Life.  Relay for Life raises money to find a cure for cancer. Thetas had a great time camping out with fellow Greeks at the event and it was great to see so many people wearing letters at the event!

Kappa Alpha Theta International Day of Service- Bettie's birthday!

On October 9th, our chapter collected new school supplies for the Philips Brooks House Association, the Harvard voluntary services organization. PBHA coordinates a number of tutoring programs all around Boston, for example the Cambridge 1-2-1 Program, and a number of our members regularly volunteer as tutors. This Kappa Alpha Theta's first International Day of Service and will now be held annually on the date of our fraternity founder Betty Locke Hamilton's birthday. Along with collecting the school supplies, we celebrated with a delicious cake decorated in her honor.

Other Zeta Xi Service Activities

Habitat Build 2010

On Saturday February 20th a group of Zeta Xi members traveled to Dorcester, MA to help construct some houses through Harvard Habitat for Humanity. Despite having to get up at 7am on a Saturday morning, the sisters discovered new talents and impressed the site leaders!

Harvard Square Homeless Shelter Shift

Our membership comprises high-achieving young women from a wide variety of student clubs and organizations.  We are proud that a very high percentage of Zeta Xi members choose to donate their time to volunteer away from the group.  Two of these such members are Liz Durgin and Caroline McDowell, both homeless shelter directors.  Liz now directs Kappa Alpha Theta's own weekly shift in the Harvard Square Homeless Shelter and we are very thankful to Lauren Medina, our weekly shift leader who patiently teaches us all to make grilled cheese sandwiches!

Past Service Spotlight Activities

Thetas are gearing up for Kickin' It For CASA. More than one hundred people are signed up to compete for giftcards from Bolocco and snack on food from B. Good. Who will win this year's championship trophy? Join us at Cambridge Common on April 28th from noon-2pm to be a part of the fun!
