A Warm Welcome

Recruitment at Delta Epsilon/Arizona State.
Recruitment is my favorite week of the Theta year. So, imagine my delight in getting to repeat that week five times over this semester! By the middle of September, I will have been lucky enough to visit two chapters for pre-recruitment workshops and three chapters for recruitment week.
It is always fun to see how each campus and Theta chapter does recruitment differently, yet there is always a common similarity. Each chapter extends a warm welcome to each potential new member, sharing with them the true idea of sisterhood and bond that we have all found within Kappa Alpha Theta. I love recruitment because this camaraderie is amplified. Looking past the chants and glitter, more »matching shirts or slideshow presentations, each woman who visits Theta during recruitment notices something special, something genuine, something true.
To those newest members of Kappa Alpha Theta: WELCOME. Each chapter has thought long and hard about their decisions, as have you. This decision was not taken lightly, and therefore we know it will be one you will cherish for a lifetime. Congratulations from every sister, 250,000 strong, who have experienced Theta and how it can enrich your life. We are all so excited to have you!

Best of luck to all collegiate and alumnae chapters this semester. More updates soon from all of us on the road!

Lauren and I at the Meet the Greeks event!
This has been one of the most exciting weeks of my Theta career! This year I will be based at the University of Tampa with Lauren Lewis colonizing the Eta Tau chapter. I have been very excited to get started and it is finally beginning!
This past Sunday, August 22nd, Lauren and I flew to Tampa and began our move. We were able to, in one day, move everything in to our apartment and begin our transition to the area. I believe we went to Target around 5 times in 24-hours. We also live on the third floor of our apartment complex and carried over 300 pounds of stuff up to our apartment. We felt so strong after!
Once we were done unpacking, we were able to explore the area. It more »is so beautiful down here! There are definitely some similarities and differences for both us, as we are from New Hampshire and Chicago. It has been fun acclimating to a different part of the country. We feel so lucky to wake up every morning and have the view of the Tampa Bay outside of our window. As you can tell, we are very excited to be here!
During the past two days we have begun getting to know the University of Tampa community. It has been a great experience. We went to training with the recruitment counselors yesterday and just attended a Meet the Greeks event with the entire Greek community. It was very fun! We have felt so welcomed on campus and have enjoyed interacting with members of the community.
We look forward to the journey that lies ahead of us this year. The process has been very fun and we feel so honored to be able to be a part of this unique opportunity. We will be sure to keep everyone updated and don’t forget to Think Theta! « less

The 2010-2011 ELCs on one of our successful rafts while teambuilding at Bradford Woods!
With the summer winding down, I thought I would update you all on what the ELCs have been up to all while preparing for life on the road.
The summer began with the four returning consultants, Alyssa, Hilary, Justine and I moving into Headquarters to help get ready for Grand Convention 2010. We had a wonderful time getting to know HQ staff and perfected the art of tying a bow. The six weeks we were at HQ flew by and it was finally ready to meet up with the six new consultants in Tucson, Arizona.
We arrived at the Starr Pass Resort a few days before convention was to get underway. To get to know one another we traveled to the White Stallion Ranch to participate in some more »team building activities. While at the ranch, we had the privilege to work world renowned horse whisperer, Koelle. All ten of us had the opportunity to get inside a pen and try our skills whispering a horse. It was something I had never done before and was quite an amazing experience filled with lots of laughs. After our fun day at the ranch, we headed back to the Starr Pass to prepare for all of the Theta women that would be joining us in just a few days.
If you’ve been keeping up on the blogs, I am sure you have read all about Grand Convention. I feel so fortunate to have been able to attend and meet such influential Theta women from all over. Working at convention was a great way for the new group of ELCs to get to know one another before we made the move to Indianapolis for our summer training.
Training started in mid-July and we hit the ground running. We first headed to Bradford Woods, which was about a 45 minute drive from HQ, for more teambuilding. One of the most memorable parts of this summer was the raft building experience that I shared with the other ELCs and our fearless leader, the Assistant Director of Chapter Services, Jenni Broughton. For this experience, the 11 of us were taken to one side of a lake on a pontoon boat and left with rope, a few wooden boards and four 50 gallon drums. With these materials and four oars, we had to make our way back to the other side of the lake. After taking some time to strategize we jumped in the lake with our materials and started tying knots, lots and lots of knots. We had some success, and them some failures, but we finally made it to the other side of the lake, in just about one piece. Nobody told us that we had to be above water when we made it!
After our fun time at Bradford Woods, we went back to HQ and got down to learning everything you could ever know about Theta. A big big thank you to all of the volunteers who dedicated their time to give us a top notch training experience. Because of all of you, we are able to impact the women of Theta throughout our travels. We also participated in the Risk Management on the Road conference, which is put on by Theta and MJ Insurance and also the Fraternity Executive Association’s Field Staff Conference. At both of these conferences, which were both held in Indianapolis, we were able to learn new skills and network with consultants from other fraternities and sororities.
Somehow, in the middle of all of our training fun, late June when we all arrived in Tucson, turned into mid-August and it was time to say goodbye to Indianapolis and start traveling! This summer was such an amazing experience and it was so wonderful to share it with so many fabulous Theta women. All ten of us are starting to venture out on the road, so stay posted for some ELC updates! « less

Theta's welcome back at The University of Vermont!

New Members at the University of Vermont
This past Saturday I had the opportunity to travel to New England to assist in welcoming Kappa Alpha Theta back to the University of Vermont. I was joined by another ELC, Hilary Holmes and Director of Extension, Lindsay Sell on campus for Pledge Service and a bid day celebration. Thirty-six new members attended the services, which were held with the help of nine Lambda alumnae. Please enjoy this video to see the reaction of our newest Theta members receiving their letters for their first time.
Fun Theta Fact: While Theta new members are not typically allowed to wear letters before initiation, new members of a colony of the Fraternity are permitted to wear their letters after they more »are pledged.

Me with Karen Ledbetter and MaryJane Beach, two former Fraternity Presidents, at UVM on one of my last ELC days!
Two years. Two years and it feels like a lifetime! Two years of this ELC adventure all coming to a close in the blink of an eye. It feels like I am once again graduating college and reminiscing on my ELC journey just as I reminisced about my UCF journey when I gave my last will and testament to my Eta Theta sisters. To think, when I first stepped foot into the boardroom for training, I had just graduated from college only a few weeks prior. When I think back on the unbelievable memories, there are so many things that stick out.
Being a Canadian and growing up in the US has been a unique feature that has defined me time and time again. I am truly grateful that I have had the more »opportunity to see most of this great country and experience all that each state has to offer. I even got to explore parts of Canada that I’d never been to before. Unlike many of my close friends who traveled overseas immediately after graduating, I took advantage of exploring the USA and I couldn’t be happier that I did. My map is covered with colorful dots indicating places I’ve visited, each with a fun story to go with it!
Friends! Oh the friends I’ve made throughout my ELC experience. The first ones that come to mind are my 20 fellow ELC companions. These women will forever be the women I go to when I need a good travel partner, 3rd party listener/advice giver, place to visit away from home and of course the people who will always share this experience with me. They are my friends, and ones I know will last a lifetime thanks to our Theta bonds. There are other women I consider friends too! These are the ones I’ve made on my visits. The Thetas around the country who have been there to welcome me into their homes and chapters; the women who kept in touch with emails and cards, they are also friends I will take with me. Last but not least, the Theta staff and volunteers who have been my support system throughout this journey. Without these friends, I would have literally and figuratively been lost. These are the advisors, district team members, HQ staff and Grand Council members who I will always look up to and who have inspired me to continue giving back to the Fraternity.
Lastly, it would be impossible to say goodbye without giving props to our ELC program. Over the years, the program has evolved into something so unbelievable that I sometimes wonder myself how I was so lucky enough to have ended up here. My personal growth and professional experience have been immeasurable and I owe it all to this job. I am grateful that the program allowed me to have the 2nd year experience and build on everything from the previous year.
With smiles and tears I bid farewell to the ELC life and look forward to what the future holds. It has been an honor serving the Fraternity as an ELC!

The 2009-2010 ELCs and our wonderful Boss Jenni and Tori!
I simply cannot believe how fast this semester has gone! It is already the end of April and before we know it summer will be here in full force! Currently, I am visiting the Alpha chapter at DePauw University which is my last visit for the spring semester. It is somewhat ironic that I am ending my journey as an ELC this year in the same place where Theta started. The end of another academic year is always a little bitter-sweet for me. Reflecting back on the experiences that I have had this year have made me realize how fortunate I am to be a Theta. I have met the coolest people in the coolest places! It's insane to think that my experience as an ELC is half-over. I am excited to say that I more »will be returning next year as a second year ELC, so maybe my experience has only half begun! :)
On Wednesday, all of the 2009-2010 ELCs will be meeting in Indy at Headquarters for the last time. It is truly a bitter sweet moment for all of us. I know the women who are not returning next year are looking forward to starting a new chapter in their lives and using the things that they have learned from their ELC travels in the "real world." I am so happy to have met every single one of the ELCs and am excited to have great friends all over the U.S. I will truly miss Taryn, Jill, Whitney, Lauren, and Jennica but I am so excited to see where their lives take them and the differences they make in this world. Theta is so fortunate to have great members like these five women. They have contributed so much to the Fraternity and have made a difference all over the U.S. and Canada. I am excited to visit each and every one of them at some point, so I hope they are ready for me to drop by at any moment!
I am sad that one chapter in my ELC book is coming to a close, but am so excited for a new chapter to begin! The Fraternity has selected six wonderful women to be ELCs for the 2010-2011 academic year and we are so excited for them to join the team! These ladies are going to make a huge contribution to the Fraternity and I can't wait for training this summer!
This summer the four returning ELCs (Justine, Hilary, Mallory, and I) will be working at Headquarters! We are very excited to live in Indy and have a somewhat "normal" life with a 9-5, Monday through Friday schedule! We have a number of fun festivities planned including attending concerts, the Indy 500, and of course Grand Convention! We are going to have a blast!
I hope that as your academic year comes to a close, you remember all of the good times that you have had with your Theta sisters and are looking forward to next school year! Have a wonderful summer!
See you down the road and hopefully at Grand Convention!
