Ten Years Later: Thetas Changing Lives (Including Mine)

Thanks to Kappa Alpha Theta, getting involved in a fundraiser during college changed my career path and focus in life.
In January 2002, I joined the Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at IU. A fellow sorority member introduced me to Indiana University Dance Marathon, a staple fundraiser on the IU campus since 1991 (fellow Theta Jill Waibel started Dance Marathon as a tribute to good friend Ryan White after he lost his battle with AIDS).
Almost ten years later, I can honestly say that I am where I am because of Kappa Alpha Theta and IU Dance Marathon. After surviving 36 hours on my feet, I became a committee member and, finally, I served as the director of dance relations for the IUDM Executive Board with two fellow Thetas—Rachel Auerbach and Lisa Babcock.
I was inspired to attend law school at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law. I worked in various positions, helping children and families. For more than two years, I served as a guardian ad litem and attorney for abused and neglected children. My work was both challenging and rewarding, but I craved more change. I wanted to provide more preventative services for “my kids,” as I called my clients.
Currently, I work as the director of annual giving for Children’s Home + Aid in Chicago, Illinois. I love my job because it allows me to share my passion for helping kids with others; I am able to inspire people to give back and to get to know the children and families who we serve.
“Theta for life!” I like to say. Because, as all of you know, Kappa Alpha Theta is truly an organization that changes lives—it certainly changed mine. Thank you to all my Theta sisters and fellow IU Dance Marathoners who’ve helped me get to where I am today.
