
In 1990, the United States-Soviet summit reached accord on armaments, and the U.S. Supreme Court upset the law banning
flag-burning. The Western Alliance ended the Cold War and proposed joint action with the Soviet Union and eastern Europe.

Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait and seized petroleum reserves, setting off the Persian Gulf War. Operation Desert Storm
brought young American men and women to foreign soil, and the television-watching audience learned a new word--SCUD.
Russian President Gorbachev assumed emergency power in November, and leaders of 34 nations in Europe and North America
proclaimed a united Europe.

The Warsaw pact was dissolved on July 1. Boris Yeltsin was inaugurated as the first freely-elected President of the
Russian Republic.

The United Nations approved a U.S.-led force to guard food for Somalia, and William Jefferson Clinton became the first president
from the baby-boomer generation. "Jurassic Park" became the all-time revenue-producing movie, and Barney became the best purple
friend of America's children. The American woman was breaking through the glass ceiling, and the business suit and briefcase
replaced the apron of long ago.

In 1994, there were 84 Thetas eligible for 75-year membership awards. The Fraternity became a pioneer in the Greek
world with its new-member program that included initiation with four weeks of pledging.
Commitment to service, to scholarship, and to sisterhood remain constant themes throughout this decade. CASA, Court
Appointed Special Advocates, became the focus of the national philanthropic activity of the Fraternity, and chapters
continue to strive to achieve the highest academic standards. Sisterhood has not only strengthened through chapter
activities but also grew with the addition of new chapters at these universities: University of South Carolina,
College of Charleston, MIT, UC-Davis, Harvard-Radcliffe, Wake Forest, Furman, UC-San Diego, Ohio Northern, Delaware,
University of Texas at Dallas, Pepperdine, Johns Hopkins, and University of Southern Mississippi. |
