L-R: Laura and "Tink" after finishing their half marathon.
I'm in Texas; she's in Afghanistan. But 8,000 miles couldn't stop my Theta sister and I from running the same half marathon!
Early in December, I completed my first half marathon as part of the Bryan/College Station (Texas) Half Marathon. But I was not alone! BCS partnered with Camp Lindsey in Kandahar, Afghanistan to simultaneously run the race. And it all happened because of a Theta connection.
One of those runners stationed in Kandahar is a Theta, code-named “Tink” for security reasons. And she is a Delta Xi/North Carolina sister of mine! When Tink saw on Facebook that I signed up for the race, she contacted the BCS crew to organize the partner run. I had a "Leading Women" Theta t-shirt sent to her so we could both wear it during the race.
Unlike the weather here in Texas that morning (31 degrees and icy roads!), Kandahar was a beautiful, cool day&mash;perfect weather conditions for a long run! More than 50 runners consisting of US Army, US Air Force, Australian Army, Bulgarian Army, and African civilian participants completed the run.
Thanks to the race organizers for allowing this partner race with our military, and for enabling Tink and I to reconnect!
