Dian Fossey, Zoologist and Activist
Dian Fossey, Gamma Xi/San Jose State, is born.

A zoologist, Fossey becomes a leading authority on mountain gorillas through her work in Rwanda. Her book and the movie it inspired, 'Gorillas in the Mist,' chronicles this work and her concern for the future survival of gorillas.

Mary Hamilton Swindler, Classical Art Scholar
Mary Hamilton Swindler, Beta/Indiana, dies.

Swindler contributed to 20th century archaeology through writing and teaching. Her work, Ancient Painting, (1929) is a classic. The American Journal of Archaeology gained international respect under her editorship (1932-46).

Adelaide MacDonald Sinclair, Military Commander and UNICEF Founder
Adelaide MacDonald Sinclair, Sigma/Toronto, is born.

Sinclair, an economist, will serve as Fraternity president, a Canadian military commander during World War II, a delegate to the United Nations, and a founder of UNICEF.
