Educational Leadership Consultant Program
ELCs 2008-09
The Kappa Alpha Theta Educational Leadership Consultant (ELC) program was launched in 1959, and has quickly become one of the most coveted positions in the Fraternity. ELCs demonstrate a rich tradition of service to Kappa Alpha Theta. Since 1959, 335 Thetas have been selected to serve the Fraternity as a consultant. In that time, 69 college chapters have been established under the guidance of ELCs.
ELCs are recent college graduates who serve in a very visible role for the Fraternity. Their term generally spans from July to April. They are role models for Kappa Alpha Theta's college chapters and alumnae volunteers. ELCs are required to have a thorough knowledge of Fraternity laws and procedures, must enthusiastically support Theta's ideals, and foster the Fraternity's goals and objectives. They are responsible for gathering and distributing information and providing support for the improvement of college chapter operations. They are enthusiastic motivators who dedicate at least one academic year to assisting our chapters as they learn, grow, and excel.
How Do ELCs Help Our Chapters?
Learn: ELCs are the Fraternity's educators. They educate chapter officers and members on Fraternity policy, procedure, and best practices. Additionally, they educate advisors and share information with Fraternity officers that facilitate opportunities to provide our college chapters with the best possible support. They are that vital link in bridging the gap between what happens locally to what is happening internationally.
Grow: ELCs are essential in helping Kappa Alpha Theta grow. In the extension process, ELCs help create an understanding of Theta where there has previously been none. They provide education, sisterhood activities, and a sense of order to our new chapters. They are role models for our newest members and provide our chapters with a strong foundation for future growth and success. In addition to ensuring that our new chapters grow, ELCs also work with established chapters in recruitment planning and preparation, providing them with possibilities to continually grow. ELCs assist in motivating chapters, facilitating recruitment workshops, and ensuring the success of chapters in both formal and informal recruitment.
Excel: ELCs are committed to the success of every chapter. The ELC provides chapters with meaningful feedback both during and following her visit. She helps chapter officers and committees understand their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, trends, and threats. She provides chapter leaders with an opportunity to develop action plans that encourage use of strengths to excel where opportunities exist.
ELC Credentials
To ensure that consultants are prepared for their role, a four-week training session is held at Fraternity headquarters each summer. ELCs receive training from previous consultants, Grand Council members, Fraternity officers, and other professionals. Training sessions focus on Fraternity laws, policies, and procedures; current issues facing college campuses; recruitment; and finance. ELCs also learn about effective communication and motivation techniques. Additional training includes necessary preparation for starting new chapters, maintaining thriving chapters, and offering in-depth assistance to challenged chapters.
ELCs have the responsibility of making their own travel arrangements, documenting their expenses, and managing their time to meet the objectives of each chapter visit. The skill of gaining independence is quickly learned, with the comfort of knowing that Fraternity support and guidance is only a phone call or e-mail away!
Do You Have What It Takes To Be an ELC?
ELCs have continued to serve the Fraternity well beyond their year or two of service, remaining committed to the Fraternity's high ideals. More than 60 former ELCs have served as either a chapter advisor or FCB member, more than 80 as an international officer for the Fraternity, three have gone on to serve as Council members, and five as Foundation trustees.
If you believe you can contribute to this rich tradition of women who have served as ELCs and meet the following requirements, we encourage you to apply:

This all adds up to a very desirable compensation package for women right out of college!
Seeing the "big picture" of Kappa Alpha Theta and serving the Fraternity are benefits of the consultant program, but many times the lifelong friendships that are formed among consultants is the most rewarding outcome of their year on the road.
