But Theta love holds timeless thro’ all sorrows,
The chain that binds us, linked heart to heart.
Thetas know the feeling of being part of a sisterhood rooted in support, kindness, and friendship. Our beloved sisterhood expands across North America, and Thetas are linked by a desire to do good and show others what “Theta Love and Mine” means wherever they go. This is exactly why the Friendship Fund, celebrating 100 years in 2027, is so special—not only our organization but also to the thousands of sisters who have chosen to pass kindness forward to help a sister in need.
The Friendship Fund was established at Grand Convention 1926 to help Thetas experiencing financial and emotional hardship due to events like natural disasters, life threatening illnesses, job loss, and other unimaginable and life-altering circumstances. While the Fund was established in 1926, the anniversary is officially celebrated when the Fund’s first gifts were collected: Founders Day 1927.
The identities and amounts gifted are kept confidential. Two members write on behalf of another member whom they wish to receive a monetary gift through the Fund. The Friendship Fund committee reviews the requests on a regular basis, along with the total amount of funds available, then decides upon the gift amount. Past recipients have described their genuine surprise at receiving a letter and check in the mail, never knowing that they were ever being considered, thought of, or supported behind the scenes by their Theta sisters.
While donations to the Fund are usually made to align with Founders Day, these non-tax-deductible donations can be made at any time. Members are encouraged to donate one dollar for every year they’ve been a member, but any amount of support is always appreciated.
The centennial anniversary of the Friendship Fund is representative of the fact that sisterhood and true Theta love provides wraparound support for all times and at all times. As a recent college graduate and Theta alumna, I recognize the importance of the Fund more now than ever. Our commitment to each other as Thetas extends beyond our time as collegians. Recipients of these gifts may never know that a sister halfway across the country cared enough to support them. Through the Friendship Fund, we reaffirm our belief that Kappa Alpha Theta is larger than ourselves and that what we give to one another comes full circle.
