What Board Service Gave Me, and What It Can Give You

When I look back on the past decade of service to Kappa Alpha Theta, I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Serving on Grand Council for 10 years—first as vice president (2016–2022) and then as president (2022–2026)—has been one of the greatest honors of my life.

My six years as a vice president were an apprenticeship in leadership. I learned the power of thoughtful governance. I learned that while I was leading, I was no longer an individual leader. I learned how to be transparent while maintaining confidentiality. Grand Council is entrusted with protecting Theta’s legacy while preparing it for the future. That work requires courage, humility, collaboration, and a deep love for our sisterhood. Those years taught me to listen carefully, ask better questions, and approach challenges with equal parts heart and discipline.

When I stepped into the presidency, I carried those lessons with me. Leading Theta through this season meant thinking long term while staying grounded in our purpose: fostering lifelong sisterhood, creating community, and empowering women.

The highlights are countless: listening to collegians and alumnae share stories of support and resilience provided such hope and inspiration; watching sisters grow into confident leaders reminded me of Theta’s impact in and beyond campus life; and reestablishing Theta chapters renewed my aspirations for the future of this organization.

There were also difficult decisions. Leadership at this level is not always comfortable. But every challenge reaffirmed my belief in the strength of our sisterhood and in the caliber of women who serve it.

Above all, I will treasure the people: the volunteers, staff, collegians, and alumnae who give their time and talent to Theta. To experience our sisterhood while serving alongside women of such integrity and commitment has been a true gift I will cherish forever.

If you are reading this and quietly thinking, “That could never be me,” I want you to pause.

I once thought the same thing.

I did not see myself serving on Grand Council. I did not see myself as president. In the beginning, I did not even see myself as an advisory board chair (ABC). Someone else saw potential in me before I recognized it in myself. Their encouragement opened a door I might never have walked through on my own.

Board service is not about having all the answers. It is about being willing to listen, to challenge, to lead with integrity, and to steward something larger than yourself. Theta needs members who care deeply, who think strategically, and who are brave enough to answer the call, even and especially when they feel unsure. If someone has encouraged you to apply, take that nudge seriously. If no one has yet, consider this your encouragement.

Theta’s future depends on members who are willing to raise their hands. It may feel daunting. It may stretch you. But it will also transform you in meaningful ways you cannot yet imagine. I am forever grateful that someone believed in me. And I hope you will believe in Theta, in board service, and in yourself.

Applications are now open. Please fill out the application if you are interested in making yourself available for any of Theta's three boards: Grand Council, Theta Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and the Fraternity Housing Corporation’s (FHC’s) Board of Directors.
